Sugars
Sugars are usually the toughest food to avoid while detoxing. Sugars, while they may taste good to you now, after about 20 days of the cleanse, you’ll start to lose cravings for them.
Sugars are highly addictive drugs which feed bad bacteria in your gut, spike-then-crash energy levels, create disease and inflammation in the body, and increase emotional instability.
First, when sugar is eaten, it gives you a high of good-feels, but after about an hour, your body experiences a crash. The issue with simple carbohydrates is just that: it doesn’t give you sustainable energy. For this cleanse, we’re looking at creating sustainable energy for you and your gut which means we will need to stay away from refined sugars entirely. As soon as you do so, you will begin to feel significantly better.
Simple sugars are linked to many diseases such as diabetes, weight gain and heat disease. In addition they make your body acidic, which is tied to almost every major disease, including cancer. Most people crave sugars because their energy levels are low. However, once you’re able to back away from sugar (and other stimulants), your body will use the more sustainable complex carbs for energy, giving you a gradual energy increase and enabling you to stay satisfied for longer. You can kiss being “hangry” goodbye!
To summarize, sugar:
- Spikes your insulin which overloads your liver
- Feeds candida in our body (a devastating fungus)
- Contributes greatly to body acidity and disease
- Creates emotional imbalance
- Lowers energy levels and the immune system
As you come off this drug you will most likely experience withdrawal symptoms, at which point using MetaPWR oil will make the process considerably easier.
Abundance in Physical Health
In my Life More Abundantly Course I have a section on cultivating abundance in physical health, and in that section I share some powerful information about sugar. I want to share that section of the course below to help you in this cleanse.
Examples of sugars to stay away from
All of the following are Refined Sugars which must be avoided:
Anhydrous dextrose, agave sugar, brown sugar, cane crystals, cane sugar, corn sweetener, corn syrup, corn syrup solids, crystal dextrose, evaporated cane juice, dextrose, fructose sweetener, fruit juice concentrates, high-fructose corn syrup, liquid fructose, malt syrup, pancake syrup, raw sugar, sugar, syrup, white sugar, white bread / grain, and white rice.
The following are Natural Sugars to have minimal amounts of at most:
Maple syrup, honey, molasses, dates, dried fruits, fruit juice
Common products which contain refined sugars: chocolate & sweets, most sauces (ex: ketchup, tomato sauce, oyster sauce, bbq sauce, etc…), most pre-made foods, most snacks, … basically just read labels before you buy.
Examples of complex sugars to eat
Vegetables which contain sugar are the best options because they balance out their sugar content within their full nutritional profile. Ex. Carrots, sweet potato, butternut squash.
Sweet fruit (like sweet apples or bananas) and natural sugars need to be paired with a fat such as almond butter to slow digestion, otherwise avoid them.
Next Steps
- Eliminate all refined sugars from the list. Limit your amount of natural sugars and dried fruit as much as possible.
- You can have as much fresh fruit as you want (not dried fruit or fruit juice!). Cooking fresh fruit can make a really tasty treat, and is definitely allowed.

Super Support
I know what it’s like to be madly craving sugar. I used to have a massive sugar addiction, and it took a huge toll on my health. doTERRA has a powerful essential oil blend called ‘MetaPWR‘ which helps curb sugar and snacking cravings. MetaPWR comes in four easy-to-use formats: essential oil, metabolic soft-gel capsules, convenient beadlets, and a tasty chewing gum.
Another option I use is doTERRA’s TrimShake. It has a special natural formula with helps with cravings by using solathin. Solathin is a special protein extract from natural food sources which helps increase feelings of satiety or fullness. With help from this ingredient, TrimShake can help to control stress-induced appetite, cravings for carbohydrates, and overeating. It’s also really tasty!
