Healthy Easter Egg Treat Alternatives For Your Toddlers This Year!

Okay everyone! It’s that time of the day! Snack time! Who doesn’t love snack time?!

Seriously though: snacks are glorious creations. And they are great ways to help kids get excited about wonderful holidays such as Easter!

Now, I’m not sure what Easter is like in your family, but in my home, we’re pretty big on Easter. Not the commercialized version with chocolate and eggs and bunnies (okay… maybe with some chocolate). But we love taking the time to remember the beautiful gift of Jesus’ resurrection and the hope that Easter represents.

Confession: I am not one of those Instagram moms who makes her kids adorable snacks and joins in on some sort of daily craft time. If I can get my kids fed three healthy meals in a day, it is a really, really good day. And I’m sure that many parents out there can understand, particularly those who are having the family (including the in-laws) over for an Easter meal.

So I figured that I would take a couple minutes to throw together a couple of ideas for super fun, super easy, and super healthy Easter treats for toddlers! Enjoy!

Healthy Easter Egg Treat Alternatives For Your Toddlers This Year!

1. Hot Cross Buns (Paleo-Style)

paleo hot cross buns feature

First up, let’s start with a super awesome snack by taking a look at these delicious hot cross buns! Being the passionate health nut (or… erm… nut-free?) mom that I am, I’ve tracked down a really great paleo hot cross bun recipe for all of you to try out! Here’s what you’ll need for this healthy Easter treat for toddlers:

Ingredients

  • 2 cups almond meal
  • 1/2 cup coconut flour
  • 1/4 cup 100% maple syrup or honey
  • 6 eggs
  • 250 grams grass fed butter melted (or ghee or coconut oil)
  • 2 apples peeled and grated (we used granny smiths)
  • 3/4 cup of unsweetened sultanas (or raisins—make sure you check for bad ones!).
  • 2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 3 tsp. cinnamon

For The Crosses

  • 1 tbs. coconut flour
  • 1 tbs. tapioca flour
  • water

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Line 12 muffin tins with large muffin cases.
  3. In a large bowl, mix the almond meal, coconut flour, nutmeg and cinnamon in a bowl.
  4. Add the maple syrup, butter and eggs and mix well.
  5. Now add the apple and sultanas. Mix again until it forms a dough.
  6. Once the mixture is all combined, roll in to 12 even balls.
  7. Place them in to the muffin cases and press down a little.

For The Crosses

  1. Place the flours in a small bowl.
  2. Gradually add drops of water while stirring, until a thick white paste forms. Use a fork to make sure there are no lumps.
  3. Put the paste into a piping bag, and pipe a cross on to the top of each bun. Now place the buns into the preheated oven for 30 minutes.

Serve without the muffin cases (so they look more bun-like), warmed and with more butter. Yummy!

2. Chocolate Coconut Sheep

Truffles PS 2 1

Okay, I admit that this recipe title is a little questionable. In my defense, the recipe is really for Chocolate Coconut Protein Bites, but writing “Chocolate Coconut Protein Bite Sheep” sounded worse.

So here’s the down low: if you want a recipe that is super low maintenance but makes you look like a mom-boss, this is the recipe to go with. It doesn’t involve any baking or cooking of any kind! Isn’t that glorious?! Check it out!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/4 cup chia seeds
  • 4 tablespoons almond butter
  • 3 tablespoons Vanilla Slim & Sassy® TrimShake
  • 3 tablespoons dark cocoa powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon honey or agave nectar
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil (melted, but not hot)
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Additional 1/4 cup unsweetened shredded coconut for rolling

Instructions

  1. Mix all ingredients together in the food processor.
  2. Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and then roll each ball in shredded coconut.
  3. Pop in the refrigerator to harden. Store in an airtight container. These will keep for up to a week.
  4. To make these balls into sheep, simply add little pretzel sticks or toothpicks into them at the bottom. Then add a small ball of this chocolate coconut protein bite recipe, put two eyes to it (be creative!), and place this makeshift sheep head onto the rest of your sheep’s body. Et voila! You have a chocolate coconut sheep! Even though the recipe is completely different, you can use this image for inspiration:

3. Edible Flower Arrangement

This is by far my favourite of the three healthy Easter treats for toddlers. Not only is it beautiful, but it is simple. That combination is absolutely perfect. Here’s what you need to do:

Instructions

  1. Purchase fruit and wooden skewer sticks.
  2. Cut fruit into vaguely flower-like shapes.
  3. Arrange fruit on skewer sticks.
  4. Serve.

You can be significantly less ambitious than the wonder-woman who made the flower arrangement above was! This is my personal goal in terms of making this snack:

BONUS!

Honestly, there is nothing easier than throwing together a fun, easy-to-assemble fruit or veggie platter, am I right? And I know that kids have been conditioned to want sugar and cookies and cake and chocolate, but if you make the platter super interesting, your kids will love it! Here are some great ideas!!

And there you have it: four super healthy Easter treats for toddlers! I hope this gave you some brilliant ideas and helpful motivation to get your food prep on!

Have a wonderful Easter, everyone! Now excuse me — I have some edible flower arrangements to make.
