We, as a collective, have been exposed to a lot of ideas about money growing up.
I remember hearing phrases like “Money doesn’t grow on trees” or “Money is the root of all evil”. You likely did too. It’s no wonder that now, as adults, we feel confused about the role of money in our lives – especially spiritually.
When I started my dōTERRA business, I had money blocks that I wasn’t even aware of. I wanted to use my business to serve people, but also to provide financial freedom for myself and my family. To do that, I needed to overcome my blocks.
Today, my goal is to help you overcome your money blocks!
What Is Your Money Mindset
Your money mindset is the set of beliefs and attitudes you develop about money. Your beliefs can stem from your environment, your friend group, your family, and your life experiences. Your money mindset drives how you save, give, spend, and even earn money.
Money is a big deal. A homeless person doesn’t have to worry about money, because he or she doesn’t have any to spend or manage. But, for those of us who have money, we need to give some thought to our finances.
The road to financial prosperity will require you to consider how you make, spend, earn, and give your money. This can be uncomfortable for some.
Financial awareness is the first step to achieving true financial abundance. While many people don’t like numbers, your numbers are critical. And it’s amazing how numbers become a lot more interesting when you put dollar signs in front of them!
Common Limiting Beliefs
Proverbs 4:23 tells us, “Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life.” Similarly, Proverbs 23:7 says, “For as [a man] thinks within himself, so he is.”
These verses remind us that we need to be careful about what thoughts we allow in our minds and hearts.
A huge source of limiting beliefs around money is from misunderstanding our worth: many of us feel like we are undeserving of wealth. We have feelings of low self-esteem and worthlessness from childhood. These feelings often stem from wounds in our heart because of words spoken over us or actions done to us. Whatever their source, they stop us from pursuing the life we want to live.
When your parents are poor, it is more likely you will be poor too. My mother was a single mom who didn’t have a lot of money. I made it my mission to learn all I could about personal finance and to secure a stable job. I got a master degree in accounting, specializing in tax. I became CPA and worked as a tax specialist for 20 years.
Despite my education and finance-oriented job, I still had limiting beliefs about money. Not just that, but I had limiting beliefs about my worthiness and my value. After many years of searching out help to shift my beliefs and to overcome my fears, my money mindset is now healed. If I can do it, you can too!
Tools for Healing
The books I recommend most are David Hicks’ book, Healing Your Financial Soul, and Stephen deSilva’s book, Money and the Prosperous Soul.
Stephen deSilva’s book teaches us that a healthy relationship with money is not just about how you handle what’s in your bank account; it’s also about what is happening in your heart.Money is a physical issue, but it is also a spiritual one. Growing up, I was never told that. I am sure many of us were never told that. If you struggle in the area of finances, ask God for insight into the possible spiritual roots to your problems. Taking the time to work through your limiting beliefs will be an important first step. Then, study biblical truths and principles about money. The resources I mentioned above are a good place to start!
In addition to these resources, seek out healing that will help you uncover the roots of damaged trust in your life. Both the Sozo ministry and the Restoring the Foundations ministry were helpful to me in my healing journey. It’s okay to enlist help to go to war on lack! My Life More Abundantly course will also be a great resource for you to explore.
In Conclusion
Our money mindset is definitely not an area that we learn about in school. And yet, it affects our lives so profoundly! It can feel very uncomfortable to look at our thoughts about money at first. But, if we are to improve our financial health, we need to dedicate ourselves to the healing journey. So don’t give up! Keep pursuing financial health. It is possible!
