Those who know me well know that I absolutely love scuba diving. I want to be in the deep blue sea, swimming with the fish and looking at sea anemone! Now, today’s topic is about doTERRA’s Deep Blue essential oil blend, which is very different than the deep blue sea, but I couldn’t resist the reference. I’ll take any opportunity to talk about scuba diving!
On that note, back to our scheduled programming: the doTERRA Deep Blue essential oil blend. This powerful blend is a family favourite in my home, and for good reasons! This blend contains the following power-packed plant ingredients:
- Camphor
- Osmanthus
- Blue Chamomile
- doTERRA Peppermint essential oil
- doTERRA Wintergreen essential oil
- doTERRA Ylang Ylang essential oil
- doTERRA Helichrysum essential oil
- doTERRA Blue Tansy essential oil*
*For those who are curious: This ingredient is what makes the blend a deep blue colour! How cool is that?
The doTERRA Deep Blue essential oil blend is designed to ease discomfort and empower the body to have a healthy inflammatory response. In my experience, this really is a blend for everyone, from those who suffer daily to those who just have temporary muscle tightness. Everyone I know who uses the doTERRA Deep Blue essential oil blend (whether in the oil, rub, or stick form, as discussed below) is amazed at how much better they feel. As the soreness dissipates and muscles relax, the relief is remarkable.
How to Use doTERRA Deep Blue Essential Oil Blend Aromatically
Similar to other doTERRA products like Oregano or Lemon essential oil, while it is certainly possible to use the doTERRA Deep Blue essential oil blend aromatically, it’s not the most effective way it can be used. So, feel free to diffuse the Deep Blue blend if you like, but I’d recommend using the blend topically.
How to Use doTERRA Deep Blue Essential Oil Blend Topically
This is where the most relief can be found! Using doTERRA’s Deep Blue essential oil blend topically is key, and there are actually three different ways you can use it. Let’s start with the oil.
Using doTERRA’s Deep Blue Essential Oil Blend on its Own
The doTERRA Deep Blue essential oil blend is the original and most potent way to use Deep Blue. It is easy on the skin and designed to provide relief to whatever area of tissue you apply it to. Just put 1 drop of the doTERRA Deep Blue essential oil blend on the desired area and gently rub it in. Remember that the oil is blue, as mentioned earlier, so be careful around clothing to avoid staining!
Note: This usage method is ideal for smaller areas. If you need to cover a larger surface area, try diluting the Deep Blue blend using fractionated coconut oil or another carrier oil. This has the added benefit of preventing evaporation and ensuring that more of the Deep Blue blend penetrates the skin.
Using doTERRA’s Deep Blue Rub
The doTERRA Deep Blue Rub is similar in concept but different in form. Similar to other rubs on the market, it provides fast acting support to relieve discomfort and soothe sore muscles. However, it is more effective than other rubs because of its higher concentration of naturally occurring methyl salicylate (discussed in more detail below)!
For those who are wondering why you would use the Deep Blue Rub when is just contains a diluted form of the doTERRA Deep Blue essential oil blend, the key is in the cream. The Deep Blue Rub has extra ingredients in it that help push the oil into your tissue, so that your tissue is able to get the benefits of the Deep Blue blend quicker. So, the reality is that the best way to use them is in tandem: start by adding 1-2 drops of the doTERRA Deep Blue essential oil blend to the desired area, and, after gently rubbing the oil in, add a small amount of the Deep Blue Rub. Gently rub that in as well.
It is worth noting that, as it works, the Deep Blue Rub can make the area you apply it to either warmer or cooler, depending on your body and environment. This is nothing to be concerned about. It is just evidence that the Deep Blue Rub is working! I just mention this from now so that you don’t worry and so that you can plan ahead. (I tend to be someone who gets cold really easily, so I don’t apply the Deep Blue Rub right before a brisk winter walk, for example.)
Using doTERRA’s Deep Blue Stick
I know what you’re thinking: “Another Deep Blue product?! Now you’re just trying to upsell me!” I get it. I’ve been there and felt that way too. But, believe it or not, there are actually different ingredients in the doTERRA Deep Blue Stick that make it unique. You don’t need to get all three products, but I want you to at least know what your options are so that you can make an educated decision about which products are best for you and your health needs!
Let’s talk about the most exciting aspect of the Deep Blue Stick: the ingredients list. While it may not sound intuitive to get excited about an ingredients list, I get very excited about the Deep Blue Stick because, in addition to having all the epic essential oils I listed at the beginning of this article, it also contains doTERRA Copaiba essential oil. Copaiba is renowned in the essential oil world for being an extremely effective natural remedy for discomfort. So, in addition to the relief, reprieve, and relaxation already built into the doTERRA Deep Blue essential oil blend, the Deep Blue Stick combines this with the relief-enhancing power of Copaiba. Now do you get my excitement?
The other thing I love about the doTERRA Deep Blue Stick is that it’s not quite as messy as the Deep Blue Rub. Don’t get me wrong: I am a huge fan of the Deep Blue Rub! But when you’re out in public, trying to rub cream on your sore back can get a bit tricky, not to mention that your hand(s) will then smell like Wintergreen. And recall that the doTERRA Deep Blue essential oil blend contains Peppermint essential oil, which is always best to keep away from your eyes and face. (Not that it’s unsafe, but Peppermint oil in the eye is uncomfortable, to say the least.)
Here’s where the Deep Blue Stick comes in. The format is much more discreet and avoids leaving you wondering whether you have a spot of bright white cream on your clothes or skin that you forgot to rub in. The design is also easy to use and apply, structured in such a way that doesn’t require you to get your hands Peppermint-y. Coupled with the Copaiba combo, and it’s honestly a win-win situation!
Now, when at home, my daughter still prefers the Deep Blue Rub over the Deep Blue Stick. She finds the texture more pleasant and soothing. So, if you’re unsure which option is best for you, don’t be afraid to try both, since they’re both unique and offer different health benefits. In a generally tense world, in my view, you can’t have too much doTERRA Deep Blue!
How to Use doTERRA Deep Blue Essential Oil Blend Internally
One thing to note is that the doTERRA Deep Blue essential oil blend comes with a child safety cap, as does doTERRA’s Wintergreen oil. In fact, it is because the Deep Blue blend contains Wintergreen oil that a child safety cap is necessary. The main active ingredient in Wintergreen – and, by extent, in doTERRA’s Deep Blue essential oil blend – is methyl salicylate. This is the same active ingredient family as acetylsalicylic acid, which is a blood thinner. For this reason, doTERRA’s Wintergreen essential oil and Deep Blue essential oil blend cannot be taken internally.
However, there is no need to take the doTERRA Deep Blue essential oil blend internally precisely because it has such a high concentration of methyl salicylate! Get this:
Most athletic rubs and similar products on the market will contain a 5% concentration of methyl salicylate. This is the “active ingredient” that does the real discomfort-relieving work in an athletic rub. By contrast, doTERRA’s Wintergreen essential oil, which is in the Deep Blue essential oil blend and the Deep Blue Rub, is 95% naturally occurring methyl salicylate! In other words, while the high levels of methyl salicylate in the doTERRA Deep Blue essential oil blend make it impossible to use internally, these high levels of methyl salicylate actually make the Deep Blue blend so effective that using it topically is more than sufficient. If you ask me, that’s kind of perfect!
Deep Blue, Deep Relief
I was going to make some reference to the doTERRA Deep Blue essential oil blend keeping you from being blue, and then I realized that that would be way too cheesy. (Some might even say “blue cheesy”! Okay, I’m actually done now.) I decided to just cut straight to the chase: Ultimately, Deep Blue provides deep relief from discomfort, achiness, tension, and muscle soreness. It is one of the doTERRA products that I would miss, acutely and intensely, if doTERRA somehow disappeared from my life. The doTERRA Deep Blue essential oil product line has been a lifesaver for my family, and I would recommend this to literally anyone. The relief and reprieve is worth the investment!

I never thought to use deep blue oil aromatically, it might be nice to diffuse when sick and congested. I’ll have to give it a try
