Mint is a fun flavour that pretty much everyone has experienced in some way, shape, or form, whether in toothpaste or in chocolate. (more on that later!) Just as there are different varieties of mint plants, there are different varieties of mint essential oils: doTERRA Peppermint essential oil and doTERRA Spearmint essential oil are two examples. And, of course, our Supermint blend is a combination of all the best mints available!
Today, I want to share with you some of my top uses, tips, and tricks for doTERRA Peppermint essential oil. You might already be using this oil in one or two different ways, but there is a whole new world of possibilities just waiting for you. It is such a versatile oil! So, here are my top 8 aromatic, topical, and internal uses for doTERRA Peppermint essential oil.
How to Use doTERRA Peppermint Essential Oil Aromatically
1. Make a DIY Healthy Red Bull
I never thought I would write the words “healthy” and “Red Bull” beside each other, so this is a shock to me too. But, yes, believe it or not, there is such a thing in the doTERRA world as a “healthy Red Bull”. Thankfully, it doesn’t have any of the strange ingredients and unhealthy aspects of a real Red Bull. Instead, you just get the burst of energy!
Here’s how it works:
- Put 1 drop of doTERRA Wild Orange essential oil onto the palm of your hand.
- Put 1 drop of doTERRA Peppermint essential oil on top of the Wild Orange oil on your palm.
- Rub your hands together to mix the two oils.
- Cup your hands together, near your mouth and your nose, and inhale deeply several times. For maximum benefit, inhale the oils through your mouth.
- Sit back and enjoy the energy rush!
When I am giving workshops, I often have people try this out, since it is such a simple – and fun! – way to use essential oils. Without fail, there’s always surprise (“Woah!”) followed by enjoyment (“Wow, that’s awesome!”). This is a really fun and perfectly safe way of trying out doTERRA’s essential oils to see how powerful they are. So, grab a friend or family member, give this a try, and see what you all think!
2. Combine with Citrus to Get Clarity and Focus
This protocol draws on similar principles and chemical combinations as the previous protocol. If you combine doTERRA Peppermint essential oil with pretty much any citrus oil, and then follow the same steps as above to get the aromatic benefits from these oils, you will notice increased mental clarity and focus.
Experiment by swapping out the Wild Orange oil for a different doTERRA citrus oil, and then go through the same steps:
- Put 1 drop of any doTERRA citrus oil, like Grapefruit or Lemon essential oil onto the palm of your hand.
- Put 1 drop of doTERRA Peppermint essential oil on top of the citrus oil on your palm.
- Rub your hands together to mix the two oils.
- Cup your hands together, near your mouth and your nose, and inhale deeply several times. For maximum benefit, inhale the oils through your mouth.
- Sit back and enjoy the energy rush and increased mental focus!
How to Use doTERRA Peppermint Essential Oil Topically
1. Hello Easy Breezy Portable A/C!
Plants from the mint family are known to have chemical properties that make them naturally cooling. These plants are so effective that companies like Buttercloth are now weaving organic mint fibers into their products to make clothing that combats sweat and naturally cools the body. So, when I tell you that doTERRA Peppermint essential oil is naturally cooling and can actually be used like a portable A/C unit, it shouldn’t be hard to believe. There is solid evidence to support and explain the science behind why this works.
If you want to safely experience Peppermint oil’s cooling properties, just take 1 drop of doTERRA Peppermint essential oil and rub it onto the back of your neck. You will begin to feel cooler almost instantly! If you’re someone who runs hot, or if you’re having a hard time regulating your body temperature while fighting off some type of sickness, using a small quantity of doTERRA Peppermint oil topically will help keep you cool and comfortable. Try it out!
2. Soothe Those Sore Muscles
Mint is known to help maintain a healthy inflammatory response and has soothing properties. This is why doTERRA Peppermint essential oil is included in doTERRA’s Deep Blue blend and Deep Blue Rub.
Peppermint is naturally cooling, bringing instant comfort after a particularly exhausting workout or tiresome day on your feet, and naturally soothing, decreasing pain and swelling in your muscles. So the next time your muscles are feeling sore and uncomfortable, try rubbing 1-2 drops of doTERRA Peppermint essential oil on the affected area. If you have a slightly larger area that is sore, diluting with fractionated coconut oil or another carrier oil will help you cover more area with a small amount of essential oil. Alternatively, if you want something that’s pre-made or more potent, check out doTERRA’s Deep Blue Rub, which is specifically designed to help penetrate those sore tissues to get the oils working faster and more efficiently!
How to Use doTERRA Peppermint Essential Oil Internally
1. All Things Chocolate!
Full confession: I wrote this part of the blog first because I was just way too excited to tell you about doTERRA Peppermint essential oil and chocolate! While using essential oils this way may not be focused on health, it is super fun, and a joyful heart is good medicine, so I figure it all balances out!
Black bean chocolate brownies. Chocolate smoothies. Hot chocolate. You name it! Whether it’s scrumptious chocolate cake or homemade chocolate coconut milk ice cream (which I make at home all the time!), adding 1 drop of doTERRA Peppermint essential oil is a safe and delicious way of getting that delightful minty chocolate mix!
And honestly, you don’t have to get super fancy. While making mint chocolate coconut milk ice cream is one of my favourite ways to use Peppermint oil in recipes, you can also just add 1 drop of doTERRA Peppermint essential oil to melted chocolate before you temper it. Yum!
Pro Tip: This is a really fun option for birthday parties or events! You can pick up fun chocolate moulds from the store (like the moustache ones that I bought for my family!), pour in the newly minted chocolate, add a small skewer stick in to harden along with the chocolate, and voila! You have a fun prop for some goofy family photos or a murder mystery dinner party!
Now, maybe you’re one of those people (and I do know a few of these poor unfortunate souls) who really don’t like the taste of peppermint in chocolate. (I’m not judging. I’m really not. I’m just praying for your soul, that’s all. 😉) If that is the case, the good news is that there are other ways to incorporate doTERRA Peppermint essential oil into recipes.
If you’re still wanting to make something sweet, you can always add 1 drop of Peppermint oil to a vanilla ice cream recipe, like the homemade vanilla coconut milk ice cream I make. Alternatively, you can try adding just the slightest bit of doTERRA Peppermint essential oil (and by “slightest bit” I mean that you should try dipping a toothpick into the oil instead of using a full drop) to a peppermint-themed cocktail (or “mocktail” for those who, like me, neither love nor can handle alcohol). Feel free to be adventurous! Just remember that doTERRA Peppermint essential oil is very powerful and very potent (with 1 drop of doTERRA’s oil being equal to about 42 cups of peppermint tea!), so you won’t need a lot!
2. Enhance Your Athletic Performance
One of the most incredible things about doTERRA Peppermint essential oil is that it has been shown by science to improve and enhance athletic performance. Studies like this one show that ingesting small quantities of Peppermint essential oil leads to statistically significant improvement in physical performance. This is attributed, in part, to the fact that Peppermint essential oil soothes sore muscles and increases oxygen flow to cells and to the brain. How cool is that?! (Pun intended.)
Some of these health benefits can be achieved through topical application, but using doTERRA Peppermint essential oil internally is safe and may be more effective, as alluded to in the study. So, whether you’re about to head to a soccer tournament or play basketball with your kids in the driveway, try adding 1 drop of doTERRA Peppermint essential oil to a bottle of water. That way, you stay hydrated, oxygenated, and cool!
3. Help with Headache Relief
In my experience, one of the most common ways that people know to use doTERRA Peppermint essential oil is with the relief of head tension. I’ve often had people over at my house who are struggling with head tension, and, while there are many essential oils that can help them, my default is to reach for doTERRA Peppermint essential oil. Recall that doTERRA Peppermint essential oil helps improve oxygen flow to the brain and cells–opening up the airways. While head tension can be caused by a whole host of factors, and while I’d likely recommend a different protocol for those struggling with more intense situations, I regularly see people experience relief just by using a small amount of doTERRA Peppermint essential oil.
There are two main ways to use Peppermint oil to help with headaches. The first is by applying the oil topically on the temples. This is super quick and easy, so this may become your go-to protocol! However, I tend to get cold very easily, and, since doTERRA Peppermint essential oil acts as a natural air conditioner, I try to avoid applying it topically unless it’s hot outside. So, I prefer the second way of using Peppermint essential oil to help with head tension:
- Put 1 drop of doTERRA Peppermint essential oil into the palm of your hand.
- Using your other hand, rub your thumb into the drop of oil.
- Place your thumb on the roof of your mouth, just behind your teeth, where the palate goes up.
- Breathe deeply and, if you like, rub the remaining oil on your temples for added relief.
- Then just wait for that welcome sense of relief!
Pro Tip: Wash your hands with soap after using doTERRA Peppermint essential oil this way. While the oil is 100% safe, it can be uncomfortable getting Peppermint oil in particular near (or, God forbid, in) your eyes. So, as an added precaution, use some soap and wash your hands well. You can thank me later!
4. Soothe Those Seasonal Discomforts
Like Lemon essential oil and Lavender essential oil, doTERRA Peppermint essential oil is a terrific tool at keeping seasonal sensitivities at bay. Peppermint oil is one of the key ingredients in doTERRA’s Triease softgels, which come pre-made and are my immediate go-to when I start sniffling and sneezing. (One word: ragweed.)
If you prefer DIY options, take an empty veggie capsule and combine 1 drop of each of the following oils:
- doTERRA Peppermint essential oil
- doTERRA Lemon essential oil
- doTERRA Lavender essential oil
Close the capsule and pop it in your mouth. Wash that down with some water, give your body some time to process, and you should notice a drastic improvement in your ability to breathe clearly without symptoms (and without drowsiness!).

I use pepermint on my temples and on the roof of my mouth for headaches. I love putting a few drops on the rocks and diffuse in the sauna!
I love to diffuse peppermint in the house. Especially during the musty wet and raining weather. The crisp fresh scent always lifts our spirits and makes everything feel cleaner and fresh again.
