Polyphenols are becoming increasingly popular in the health world. One quick Google search will bring you to hundreds of studies recently published on how Polyphenols can ward off cancers, IBS, lower cholesterol and blood pressure or even lead to a longer life.
So, what are Polyphenols, exactly?
Polyphenols are part of a large group of more than 500 phytochemicals naturally found in plants. Phytochemicals are important to plants because they are what give them their colour and protect them from threats.
If you look at the foods that have extremely high polyphenol potency, it’s no surprise they tend to be the most colourful plants (e.g. blueberries and pomegranate).
How Polyphenols Affect Us
When we eat plants that contain polyphenols, we reap the benefits of them. Polyphenols act as antioxidants and can help prevent cellular damage from free-radicals (more on that later).
Benefits of Polyphenols
You may think that eating foods such as dark chocolate or wine are great for you because they are high in antioxidants (yay!). However, the amount is minimal compared to what you actually need to get the maximum benefits. I mean, there’s only so much chocolate you can eat in a day!
When you take polyphenols as a supplement, you get to enjoy all these exceptionally powerful, natural molecules without consuming any alcohol, caffeine, sugar, calories, or other potentially harmful stimulants.
A Healthy Inflammatory State
Polyphenols contribute to the body being in a healthy inflammatory state, they are immensely helpful when it comes to over-excited neural pathways. Not only do they help with discomfort from inflammation, research shows that polyphenols help alleviate neuropathic pain and pain from physical damage. Specifically, polyphenols were also shown to be effective against fibromyalgia pain.
Blood Clots And Clogged Arteries
Polyphenols also appear to improve the function of blood vessels and may help to slow down the formation of blood clots. In one study, for example, researchers found that the catechins in tea may have the ability to slow down the process that causes clogging of the arteries. Green tea’s wide variety of health benefits have been established for hundreds of years; however, recently scientists have identified its catechins, specifically EGCG (Epigallocatechin Gallate) as the molecules responsible for these benefits.
Polyphenols For A Longer-Lasting Life
In addition to the research I referred to above, these polyphenols are the subject of some of the most exciting anti-aging and wellness research. Resveratrol (in red wine) is believed to be a key component of the healthy Mediterranean diet. It is thought to be responsible for the “French Paradox,” where the French enjoy far better heart health than would be expected from a less than ideal diet and lifestyle. Grape seed is known for its exceptional levels of protective polyphenols, particularly OPCs (Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins), which are powerful antioxidants. Pomegranate often referred to as the “sacred fruit”, is another key ingredient in this product. Punicalagin has been identified as a key beneficial molecule behind pomegranate’s benefits.
Free Radicals
It’s important for us to take a moment to go over “free radicals”. “Free radicals” is a newer term that is also gaining attention in the natural health world. Free radicals are essentially atoms that damage cells, causing aging and illness. Everyone has free radicals in their body, and the older you get, the more your cells become weakened and destroyed by free radicals.
But don’t lose hope! A diet filled with healthy antioxidants and supplements are proven to reduce the amount of free radicals. You have the power to slow down aging and increase vitality!

dōTERRA is the first to combine the power of Turmeric essential oil and Turmeric extract in a dual chamber capsule. Combining these two elements of the plant creates a uniquely powerful synergy of turmerones and curcuminoids. This combination maximizes the effectiveness and benefits of both compounds for a healthy inflammatory response. Research has shown that curcuminoids have poor bioavailability, but when combined with turmerones from Turmeric essential oil, bioavailability can be increased 11-fold!
Polyphenols give you the power to restore your vibrancy and get back into action. Access that power today!
